I used to think of journaling as just another thing on my already too-long list of things to do. Something that sounded like a good idea but was difficult to put into practice.
Then, like a series of matchsticks reigniting the still smoldering devastation of my divorce 10 years prior, my dad died, Covid hit, my oldest daughter went to college, and I broke up with a long-term boyfriend.
I was consumed with grief and desperate for a safe, healthy, and effective outlet.
So I started walking and writing a little bit each day. It wasn’t easy. I thought about both for a long time before mustering the courage, energy, and will-power to just start.
After several months of fits and starts, and a truckload of self-compassion, I managed to develop an almost daily habit of walking for 20-30 minutes and writing three pages in an old composition notebook.
It saved my life.
